Default Connection Issues

As some of you may or may not know, there was some sort of major server crash (or something of the sort) which caused many players to get disconnected from whatever they were doing in the game last night. I was one of those unfortunate people and after attempting to reconnect, I gave up and went to bed. Now, I tried reconnecting again today, however, I still could not connect. I repeatedly received the "NetErr=58" error message.

Now, apparently everyone else has been able to reconnect to the game servers, and they've been able to login. However, it's been almost a full day since the incident last night, and I'm wondering why I can't connect. I've emailed ANet tech support and am awaiting more responses.

Now, nothing like this has ever happened to me ever since I got the game, which has been several months. i have never changed my internet/firewall/router settings, and so I still don't understand why I still cannot reconnect. I've tried reinstalling the game as well but to no avail.

Does anyone know if there are still some servers that are not fully "repaired"? Or if anyone has any thoughts as to why I am unable to reconnect, that would be nice. Thanks guys.

A couple of suggestions:

1) Turn off any software firewalls and try logging in. If you have a router in between the PC and your connection device, try removing it temporarily

2) If you use a cable modem, DSL, or router, try power-cycling all these devices.

Well I have tried power-cycling and logging in with my firewall disabled, but still have had no success.

To reiterate, my connection was working perfectly fine yesterday, before the server problems which forced many people to get disconnected. Keep in mind, I have not changed any of my firewall/internet/router settings at all. So I doubt those could be the problem.

I've had hardware routers go bad before, so this was one item worth testing. Did you remove the router from your set-up as I mentioned above?

The problem could also be ISP or DNS-related. You could attempt a trace-route between your PC and ANET's GW servers. Unfortunately, I can't provide that info since I'm presently at work.

If someone else wants to help, here's how you can find ANET's IP info:

1. Log into GW and minimize the GW window. This should be the only app open.
2. open a command prompt
3. run netstat -a
4. look for the only outbound IP connection -- this is ANET's server pool IP address.

Once you have the IP, execute a "tracert <ANET server IP>"

Does the trace complete, or is there a time-out in between?

Just throwing suggestions into the air...

EDIT: BTW, if you see any outbound connections which you're unaware of, it could be spyware. Run a google-search on the port# just to play it safe

I tried using a command prompt as you suggested. However, when I attempt the "tracert <IP addres>" it gives the following message:

"Unable to resolve target system name <ip address I used>"

Chances are Im using the incorrect IP address. Does anyone have the correct address?

*I have not tried removing the router yet. I do have another computer that also has Guild Wars installed on it, and I will have to see if that computer can connect to the internet. If not, then I will see if removing the router yields any results. Thanks for the suggestions : )

Trace-route won't work until you remove the router from the set-up due to its built-in NAT (name address translation). Your GW PC should be the only device connected to the modem. If you still can't connect to GW, disable the software firewall temporarily -- this should be fine so long as you have a good virus scanner installed.

You should also perform an "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" at the command prompt after removing the router -- you must have an IP on your PC which corresponds to your ISP's network.

Smile Same Problem

Player745, me and both my roomates are having the same issue. After yesterdays patch we dropped and couldn't connect to area net. We are juggling with the possibility that since we are all coming out of the same router that perhaps they have blocked us due to some issue with security measures in the update. I have notified GuildWars support staff and got an auto-response. We are still waiting to have the issue resolved, so I don't think the problem is on your end.

Well it's good to know that I'm not the only one in this situation.

After being disconnected two days ago, I emailed ANet's tech support. After exchanging information, the problem seemed to have fixed itself. I was able to log back into the game very late last night. My luck held up partially through today as well, as I was able to login during the morning. However, I was again disconnected during the afternoon, and have been unable to reconnect since. (About 2 hours)

If this does have something to do with some security thing blocking routers from access, then I doubt I would have been able to login last night and/or this morning.

I hope ANet's support can provide you better answers than the ones I received. (Which is entirely due to the fact that I didn't exactly describe my problem very well, so can't blame ANet at all :P n the contrary, I found ANet's support to be very fast in responding to your inquiries as well as being very helpful : )

I'm in the same situation as you GWplayer, I was able to get on last night and then was kicked and haven't been able to get on since. I don't believe it is an issue with my router, and I know for a fact it isn't blocked by my firewalls or by Norton. I did run their network tool, and I've found that I can connect to all their servers but the authentification server, it errors out on all 6 tries.

You can add me to this list. I've dispatched an email at the support site with the "Ask a Question" thingie.

It appears a great number of the USA login servers are down/unreachable. I simply did a Start/Run -> CMD and ran a netstat -a while it's hung trying to connect.

Nothing on my system has changed since yesterday. It's not a firewall/router issue as I yanked my DSL modem and plugged it straight into my PC, disabled XP Firewall and have no other security installed (no AV, no nothing). If I traceroute the addresses in the netstat, all of them just infinately hop with * * * on the last address (up to 70 hops before I finally CTRL-C them).

Something is broken over here (west coast/USA) and it's either their login servers or a route between. Been Err=58 since early this morning.. 9+ hours later, same thing.

Hey guys,
I've done a ton of research on this problem. My theory is- something has changed with arenanetworks during that outtage. It appears they have installed routers that filter all ICMP traffic (likely to beef up DOS/security against attacks), but that use MTU discovery for routing.

Some DSL (mostly PPPoE protocol) use a lower MTU size.. such as 1492 or 1460... whereas most Internet devices expect an MTU size of 1500 in order to route properly for hosts incorrectly filtering all ICMP traffic and using MTU discovery for rerouting.

The way most DSL (and some rare cable) devices get around this is through MSS clamping (sending a maximum segment size during the initial handshake) to tell the receiver to use a lower MTU size for discovery. This allows incorrectly configured ICMP-filtered routers to still perform MTU discovery if they receive and sense this handshaking parameter.

Unfortunately, it appears the change over the last week has arenanetwork servers behind an ICMP filtered router (or all forms of ICMP filtered) and MSS clamps are being ignored. This makes it so PPPoE or MTU reduced interface types unable to connect/route to their login servers.

I can test this on a secondary machine as such:
nslookup auth1.arenanetworks.com
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: auth1.arenanetworks.com
Addresses: 206.127.148.93, 206.127.148.109, 206.127.148.45, 206.127.148.46
206.127.148.47, 206.127.148.48, 206.127.148.88, 206.127.148.92

MTU=1500
telnet 206.127.148.93 80
Trying 206.127.148.93...
Connected to 206-127-148-93.plaync.com (206.127.148.93).
Escape character is '^]'.

MTU=1492 (mss clamp 1440, 1460, 1420, etc.etc.)
telnet 206.127.148.93 80
Trying 206.127.148.93...
(will never connect here for 20+ minutes or times-out)

All pings and traceroutes to the above address will fail in either case, which suggests ICMP filtering. No ICMP data is allowed at the auth server routers.

So, until arenanetworks gets this fixed, I doubt anyone with PPPoE or other MTU<1500 devices can login or play the game, I'm afraid.

I've sent all this to their support. I hope arenanetworks will get MTU MSS negotiating working.. or remove the icmp filtering/routing until they can get this handled.

Strange.. I went into my router and did a "Apply" on the "WAN Setup" page.. I didn't make any changes just simply did an Apply and poof GW started right up.. Weird..

Anyway I have a Netgear Wireless router model WGR614 v5.. after reading about the MTU speed I wanted to make sure mine wasnt set below 1500... it was set right at 1500, so I did an apply on the Wan Settings Page while the "connecting to ArentNet" screen was up and it all of a sudden it connected.. Hope this helps someone out there having the same issues...

Each and every time I think my problem has been solved, I'm proved to be wrong.

This problem with loggin in seems to occur at random periods of time. Sometimes I can connect, sometimes I cannot. Just like now, I had been playing GW for a very pleasant several hours, and I just got disconnected again, and am unable to reconnect.

Sharkfood, your theory on the ICMP filtering etc. etc. is very impressive! perhaps I'll see if I can use that information to solve my problem permanently.

I have this same problem..

I tried fooling around with the settings in my router, however I do not use PPPoE so setting that MTU <1500 doesnt seem to work for me :\

Removing te router here is not really an option here because there is to much connected to it..

Hope this problem is going to be resolved soon, I havnt been able to login for 1,5 days now.. Unlike GWplayer who seems to able to logon at random times..

Heh, well I got disconnected yet again tonight. I've been doing a lot of PVP lately, and I've also been disconnected from PVP quite often ever since these connection issues started.

I'm enjoying a nice PVP round, got a nice group, got several consecutive wins, then just moments into the next round, my screen freezes, and that's when i know i'm screwed. Well, it eventually notifies me that "Guild Wars was unable to complete the Operation" or something, and I am unable to reconnect. Lovely.

Well now you know, if a player in PVP just drops out for no reason, don't get mad at them, they didn't do it on purpose. They're probably just as pissed as you are, if not more.

Default Possible fix

Hello everyone, i am new here, although i have been playing Guild Wars perfectly for a week or so, never had a problem when about 4 hours ago i hit a snag with error 58.

Well i have been banging my head as i was on a wireless connection through a router and i changed nothing during the time this happened. I could log in through a neighbors network, and directly through my modem but not through the wireless connection.

However for some reason when changing my mtu from 1500 to 1499 it allowed me to go right in, this might be a temp fix for some or maybe anet is somehow blocking certain things but its been fine now for a bit. Just wanted to harp in with my situation.
